"Hiring is like dating." - Marc Moore |

| Tampa, Denver, Minneapolis, Morristown, NJ: This is a television show about how business works. Typically we take our camera inside one business but today you'll meet the founders of five who are all members of the prestigious, Council of Growing Companies. The council members don't have problems getting going in business; they have the daily challenges of fast growth. We attended the Council's annual meeting in Tuscon, Arizona and gathered great insight on how to staff a growing company. Marc Moore of Tampa, Florida built Payroll Transfer from scratch into a service that handles the employee benefits and payroll for some 1,000 companies with a total of 22,000 employees. In his new venture, DTNet, he expects to see the same success. Barbara Grogan is founder of Denver-based Western Industrial Contractors. She has over 200 employees who build and install material handling systems all over the world. Michael Wethington founded Synet in 1992; an information technology consulting company with 60 employees, it has since been acquired in part because of the quality of the people and their work. Mary Alice Lawless founded Impact Communications in December of 1983 in New Jersey. Within nine months she had 30 employees. The business has changed through the years and in January of 2000 she changed the name of the company to ClickUpdate, then later sold the business. Here she talks about her own evolution as a leader and about how she and her staff stay ahead of trends. Lightbulb: What I notice about these business owners is that they have a well thought out human resource strategy. And, they don't expect people to read their minds. They are courageous enough to put their beliefs in writing then try to lead the organization in the direction of the written beliefs. We've learned from others here also, that to lead a growing company you have to become the person who can. For more about staffing, study the special episode called, The People Part. And, learn more from Bill Sugars, Lorraine Miller, David Arnold and Milt Moses. KEY POINTS . |
