A word from the Governor.Good People and Good Businesses,
our small business profiles in Maine

Profiles in Maine: We were in Maine from June 6-9, 2002 for productions.
  • Short TV profile.  To be selected for a show, it is important that the business is a good standing member of Maine Public Broadcasting (MPBC-- 65 Texas Ave., Bangor 04401; 1450 Lisbon St., Lewiston 04240; and 309 Marginal Way, P.O. Box 1628 Portland 04104 Tel: 800-884-1717).

We all need to support quality TV.

We also turn to some of your local Chambers of Commerce, the Department of Economic & Community Development, Maine's SBA and their Small Business Development Centers, your elected officials, business school professors, and even your business editors of your local newspapers, to select businesses to profile on Small Business School.

This show is for good people about good people.
    • New Shows:
#1: "Coming to you straight from Maine: small business owners live where they want to live and market and sell their products and services throughout the world."
Anticipated release: December 2002 - January 2003.
#2: A salute to the show, "Made in Maine," on the air for 15 years, a MPBC television show that captures the spirit of the state, the heart of America, and the soul of our economy.
Anticipated release: November 2002 - January 2003.
  • Chambers, MPBC, and others: There are wonderful insights within this show from the many midcoast Maine businesses. Many business were first recommended by their local Chamber of Commerce when asked the question, "Which businesses sell, service and support customers well beyond the state of Maine?" These businesses were selected by the small business advocates of the state for this show:
  • Web Profiles.  Become a member, get recommended by your Chamber of Commerce (there are about 80 others businesses that will be listed soon that were recommended by these five Chambers) or by your local public television station, and get listed at no cost. We invite all good small businesses in the state who have a good story to tell, positive cash flow, to be listed here. If you register on the site, you may be listed, however, you will need local references from your Chamber, SBDC, MPBC, your business editors of your local newspapers, and/or Maine's DECD to remain on the listing.

Although we continue to work with the SBA, we also rely heavily on the local Chamber of Commerce, the Department of Economic & Community Development, and the local Small Business Development Centers. These are additional businesses that will be profiled:

  • ESOP / SCOR.  Small Business School's work with state boards for accountancy (CPAs) and each of the State Securities Commissioners to help small business owners begin working from a "compilation - review" mindset to a regular audit. The goal is to have business owners fully understand their financials and business valuation so they successfully transfer ownership and keep their businesses alive beyond their working years. Many of these businesses will then institute ESOP programs and some will complete, certify and issue a Small Corporate Offering Registration.

Here will be a listing of the small businesses that have a qualified ESOP or SCOR program who have been recommended by their local Chambers, SBDC, or MPBC.
