Sometimes "Gone Skiing" (or Hiking)

Park City, Utah. In this week's show we visit with five people who each individually decided to find a way to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Meet Cathy and Skip Slusher, Lori Adamski-Peek, Greg Shirf and Christine Young; they are all small business owners who tell us why they moved to a resort and how they started a business to support this desire.

Shouldn't we all live for a while in the beauty of the Rockies?

Though it is harder than it looks, they say they're glad they did it:

  • Cathy and Skip Slusher can find the creative edge within any business and tell the story. They'll also sharpen your focus your unique strengths. Their creative services are from the heart.
  • Lori Adamski-Peek is a world-class photographer; she follows the Olympics (once as the US ski team photographer) and her work can be found in art galleries, in Sports Illustrated, TIME magazine as well as the daily newspapers in area. She is in love with her subjects, all first class competitors.
  • Greg Shirf opened the Watsatch Brew Pub and it is going strong. He has a passion for hops and for the vibrancy of his pub.

KEY IDEAS: The Study Guide

EXPLORE FURTHER:

  • READ THE TRANSCRIPT: Click on the heading! Every word of this epsiode of the show is online. Transcripts represent our attempt to capture the essence of the human spirit at its finest. This is the mission of this show, Small Business School.
  • BUSINESS BASICS: 30% of all small business owners in America are doing some type of international trade. Business owners should think of the world as a seamless marketplace and begin to find customers around the globe. Location-location-location doesn't mean the same as it did prior to 1995 (pre-Internet). Perhaps now we will be looking for location-vacation-vocation as the people of Park City suggest.
  • GO TO SCHOOL: If you enroll in Small Business School, you can watch this show as well as learn from over 130 other entrepreneurs. It is all online. It requires DSL or cable connection with no firewalls. If you answer the questions in the teaching notes and study guide, you may qualify:
    • to get listed within your business type and within your state's listings,
    • to be profiled on a show (local or national),
    • to generate automatically a business plan for debt financing and/or a SCOR for equity financing,
    • to be listed within a Small Business index, and
    • to qualify as one of the Small Business School's best of businesses within a business category.
  • OTHER SEGMENTS IN THE SHOW. We turned to several other small business owners who have become leaders in their field; they give us some tips in these segments:
  • FOUR STEPS TO START AND FOUR TO GROW.
  • SELECT CASE STUDIES BY BUSINESS TYPE.
